New Scholarship honors George J. Riehl's legacy

Tulane School of Architecture and Built Environment is pleased to announce the establishment of the George J. Riehl Scholarship Endowed Fund, created through a generous gift from Dr. Winston Peter Riehl in honor of his late father, the renowned architect George J. Riehl.

The endowment, funded through Dr. Winston Riehl's charitable trust after his passing in summer 2025, will provide ongoing scholarship support to graduate students at TuSABE, with special consideration for students demonstrating financial need.

George J. Riehl was a pivotal figure in shaping New Orleans' built environment. After studying at Columbia University Extension School, he returned to Louisiana and collaborated with major architectural firms, including the firm of Herbert A. Benson & Riehl. His work is visible throughout the city, the California and Saratoga buildings, the Louisiana State Capitol, Charity Hospital, Commander's Palace, and the iconic terminal dome at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Beyond his professional achievements, Riehl was deeply committed to New Orleans, serving as chairman of the City Park board.

Dr. Riehl's decision to endow this scholarship reflects a commitment to supporting the next generation of architects and designers who will continue his father's legacy of thoughtful, intentional design.

"This philanthropic gesture serves as a testament to the enduring impact of education and the profound legacy of George J. Riehl in shaping the built environment of New Orleans," according to the scholarship resolution.
