Third Year Core Studio for Architecture and design
Sixth-Year Design Studio
This studio focuses on a contemporary architecture intervention in a historic context. New Orleans is the oldest, most preserved city in the United States. It is the perfect laboratory to investigate and test possible contemporary architectural interventions.
The studio will focus on a collection of lots and buildings at the intersection of Magazine and St Joseph Streets. Some historic buildings, some dating from the late 1800, two warehouses from the 1950, and more recent buildings constitute an interesting site to host an art foundation.
In recent years and around the world, art foundations are becoming a common program. In most cases art foundations are new buildings (Cartier Foundation, Louis Vuitton Foundation…), and in some other cases they take on existing buildings and transform them (Pinault Foundation, Prada Foundation…).
Core Curriculum and Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will focus on developing abilities in the following learning outcomes, with emphasis on architecture as… At the conclusion of the semester, to successfully complete the studio, each student must demonstrate an ability to:
1. Research & analyze the programming of a building to establish performance requirements and design criteria for the project.
2. Synthesize site, program and building strategies iteratively to make informed design decisions.
3. Apply basic code requirements and life safety principles to design, including designing a building that fulfills egress requirements.
4. Use two-dimensional and three-dimensional representation to support design and presentation objectives.
