Spring 2025

URBANbuild is a design-build studio in which students collaboratively engage in the design, documentation, permitting, and full-scale construction of a prototypical home over the course of a single semester. Now in its twentieth iteration, the program continues to emphasize collective authorship, hands-on learning, and community partnerships. Because the outcomes of the course are the result of a collaborative effort, student material submitted here is considered “group work” and there is no individual student work.

The result of this semester: UB20—is a compact duplex developed in partnership with Louvis Services, a local nonprofit providing transitional housing to individuals experiencing homelessness. Students worked together to realize every stage of the project: from foundation digging, framing, and cladding to roofing, door and window installation, cabinetry, painting, and finish carpentry. The resulting structure is a 1,000-square-foot duplex composed of two one-bedroom units with screened porches, rainwater collection, and durable metal cladding—offering both resilience and dignity for future residents.
