Join the Tulane School of Architecture's Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design on October 4th, 5-9pm, for the opening of the fall 2023 DEPART-MENT exhibition — Play It Louder: Amplifying Carceral Realities and Abolitionist Futures.
Too often, data dehumanizes, is incomprehensible, and manipulates the truth. Play It Louder counters these realities by creating space for students, artists, and community partners to collaboratively explore the architectures of carcerality and abolition. Through design investigations, interactive works, and installations grounded in data and research, the exhibit aims to amplify the impacts of carceral systems and the potential of abolitionist principles to restore.
Play It Louder isn't just a collection of artifacts; it's a symposium of ideas, a dialogue between numbers and narratives, and an invitation to engage, empathize, and reflect. The exhibit builds on past partnerships with jackie sumell of Solitary Gardens, the John Thompson Legacy Center, and also features work by RENEE ROYALE, Langston Allston, and students at Tulane's School of Architecture.
This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. To find out more about how National Endowment for the Arts grants impact individuals and communities, visit www.arts.gov.
