Alan Karchmer, architectural photographer and alum (M.Arch ’78) will be photographing the renovation and addition to Richardson Memorial Hall and is incorporating an opportunity for students to observe his work and learn about architectural photography. (registration info below)

Karchmer’s photo sessions will take place April 25, 28, and 29 Students will sign up for 2-hour photo sessions during the Zoom lecture. During the photo sessions students will have the opportunity to observe the work in action. He will give more detailed explanations about what is involved in selecting vantage points, framing the compositions, technical aspects of the photographic process, and answer students’ questions.

Alan’s life in photography began while studying architecture at Tulane School of Architecture (now Tulane School of Architecture and Built Environment). Based in Washington DC since 1990, Karchmer is a self-taught photographer. His work draws on the foundation of his education in architecture to understand how to read buildings and tell their stories through photographs that speak with an authoritative sense of form, space, texture, and light, with images that convey a strong sense of presence and experience.

His photographs have been widely published in journals and books in the architectural press in the US and abroad and were the subject of a retrospective exhibition, Alan Karchmer: The Architects’ Photographer at the National Building Museum in Washington DC. His book Château La Coste: Art and Architecture in Provence, was the subject of a lecture he gave with fellow alum Robert Ivy, FAIA (M.Arch ‘76), at Tulane School of Architecture and Built Environment in February 2025.

Karchmer’s clients include winners of the Pritzker Prize, The American Institute of Architects Gold Medal and Firm of the Year, and the Royal Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects. The archive of his body of work is a promised gift to the National Building Museum.
