Elliot Slovis (A '24) will be presenting a lecture titled "Reusing Sao Paulo"

This lecture will be a reflection and presentation of the research work completed this past summer after receiving the Class of 1973 Travel Fellowship. Sao Paulo, Brazil is among the most populated cities in the world with over 12 million inhabitants has grown exponentially since the early 20th century. With such a massive population, the built environment is significant and the architecture that exists today creates a diverse landscape of many architectural styles. Part of this ever changing and every growing city is a rich amount of adaptive reuse projects covering all types of uses. Within this typology are large, multi-programmatic community centers provided by the organization SESC. This research explored the several examples of adaptively reused spaces for community infrastructure, and this presentation will serve as an opportunity to showcase Elliot's time in Sao Paulo, his observations of the adaptive reuse SESC centers, and reflections on spending time exploring one of South America's megacities.

Food and refreshments provided!
