Urban Hostel: A Temporary Place for Nomads

The charge for this integrated studio is the design and resolution of a normative building program and building type – a mid-scale hostel building in an urban context with temporary accommodations and associated social spaces for travelers developed over a public ground level with hostel functions and adjacent outdoor space(s).

“Hosteling” is one of the easiest ways to make a trip affordable – one pays only for what is needed….for example a bed instead of a room; amenities are shared with fellow travelers which in turn creates community and a chance to connect with people from around the world. Modeled after the European youth hostels, the mix of dorm rooms and individual rooms or suites attracts a variety of age groups and families and is not particular to a young group of travelers only.

Modeled on the urban youth hostels in Europe, these types of accommodations allow for an affordable way of traveling. The objective is to provide a safe and comfortable place to stay while offering the experience of local culture and community, connections with travelers from diverse backgrounds, and a sense of adventure and discovery.

New Orleans is a desired year-round destination for a wide range of travelers – national and international alike. Its diverse ethnic mix of population can be seen and experienced in its food culture, distinctive music and art scene, historic architecture, and a wide variety of colorful rituals and celebrations.
