Chapter 1: History and Heritage

History and heritage are shared resources that shape identity, community, and sustainability. The chapter frames heritage as a “common good,” encompassing both physical spaces and cultural traditions that preserve collective memory and foster belonging.

Rather than being static, heritage is continuously adapted and maintained. When individuals feel connected to place and history, they are more likely to care for it. In this way, heritage becomes not just a record of the past, but a foundation for sustainable and inclusive futures.
