Sergi Serrat
Professor of Practice in Architecture
Sergi Serrat is a spanish architect born in Barcelona. He received his Master's Degree in Architecture in 2002 from
the Escola Superior d'Arquitectura del Vallès in Barcelona. Since then, he has been simultaneously growing his
career as a practitioner and educator in national and international environments. He currently develops his task as a professor of practice at Tulane School of Architecture.
Sergi has been working in several schools of architecture in Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Thailand, and lately in the US, where he has fostered innovative skills and methods of design pedagogy. Not only has he been acting as a design studio instructor, but he has also taught full-fledged technology courses and organized related workshops. He approaches pedagogy in architecture not just as an instrumental transmission of principles, processes, tools and
techniques, but more like a joint venture research to develop students intellectual curiosity, critical thinking capabilities, and to stimulate their own passions and interests.
“Technology is the answer, but what was the question?” Cedric Price, 1966
Sergi’s professional career has been developed mainly through his alter ego, GRND82. Since 2004, he has won several competitions, which have resulted in some completed works. Sergi’s practice has been widely published and featured in several books and magazines. He has also been nominated for many awards, and his work has been exhibited around the world.
GRND82 is interested in producing sensitive and honest spaces, where users are more important than aesthetics or
objects. Their designs assume the limitations of their context and transform constraints into opportunities. As a result, their architecture is not spectacular or showy, but rather the result of material tradition and common-sense application. Sergi prioritizes a solid ethical and social basis without abandoning the most abstract and visual of emotional values.
