A new article, co-authored by Assistant Professor of Preservation and Urbanism Aarthi Janakiraman and Lawrence Vale of MIT explores the design-politics of decolonization in New Delhi, India. Through evolving intertwined attitudes to statuary and sonic ritual within perpetually shifting political contexts, the article explores transitions from an urbanism of imperialism to an urbanism of nationalism in India in the last century.
The research builds on Tulane’s longstanding focus on Historic Preservation. Janakiraman is a planner and designer whose work explores the spatial politics of heritage conservation. Her interdisciplinary approach to preservation studies provides much-needed insight from past development strategies in order to create equitable solutions for the future.
