There are two principal goals for the Thesis Research and Analysis course. The first of these is to prepare a well researched and thoroughly analyzed architectural topic, program and site for the thesis design project in the following spring semester. The second goal is to develop the skill set and conceptual basis for the professional tasks associated with “pre-design” in architectural offices. Typically, pre-design activities range from the research and development of programs to the study and analysis of various codes and restrictions relevant to a potential design project. Pre-design can also refer to the establishment of a design agenda - focusing on aspects of a potential project that transcend the immediate practical aspects of the design proposal. This latter conceptual agen-da established for a design project can be described as a “thesis” for the design work to be undertaken. Though architects do not always establish explicit theoretical ambitions for design projects, and although such agendas are not always developed in advance of the development of a design, in our academic setting we will work to create the practical and theoretical ambitions of a design project in the semester before that project is undertaken. This is the central work of the Thesis Research and Analysis course. The products of the semesters work will be a written document establishing the practical and theoretical agenda described above, and a brief (ten minute), digitally illustrated presentation of that agenda.
