Equity, Diversity, Inclusion Report

A message to the Tulane School of Architecture community:

I am proud to share that we are continuing to make strides toward a more inclusive school community. Just this month, our Task Force on Racial Diversity, Equity and Inclusion produced its Final Report to the school faculty, which unanimously voted to adopt the recommendations.
We are exceedingly grateful to the members of the Task Force for writing an impressive and insightful document. This dedicated group of faculty, staff, alumni and students have been working since the summer to set a course of action to develop an anti-racist approach in the classroom and in the world that lies beyond. We also want to especially recognize the work of NOMAS-Tulane in helping to set up the framework for the task force group.
The Task Force Report outlines key findings from the task force's research into the school's historical admissions, enrollment and graduation data, showing where we have fallen short and how we can advance in our goal to create and advocate for a built environment that is diverse, equitable and inclusive.
The Task Force Report also provides detailed recommendations for our school to address the disparities revealed by the report's findings – many of which have been initiated or will be soon:

  • Our school will continue the work of the task force through a new standing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, made of faculty, students and staff. Created earlier this month, the committee is charged with reviewing progress and benchmarks of success via annual reports and coordinating ongoing equity, diversity and inclusion dialogues and trainings for faculty, staff and students.
  • We have created a new page on our website, dedicated to sharing information about new and future EDI initiatives at the school and providing transparency of the process. Social media will be used to further communicate these efforts.
  • Our Alumni Council has formed a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion subcommittee to help in our accountability system and in guiding the school accountable toward our goals.
  • As I hope you've heard, we have also established and appointed a new senior administrative faculty role – Edson Cabalfin, Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion – to serve as an advocate and mentor for BIPOC students, as well as a resource faculty and staff.

Our work won't end here. For example, we are in the process of creating scholarships that will provide more opportunities to grow a diverse student body and have recently established a two-year visiting faculty fellowship dedicated to equity, diversity and inclusion – all of which will be announced in the coming days and weeks.

Tulane study to examine role of racial injustice in design of memorials and monuments

Researchers from the Tulane University School of Architecture and the School of Science and Engineering are embarking on a project that they hope answers questions about racial injustice and its impact on the design of urban spaces, monuments and memorials.

Sukkah in the age of coronavirus

Every year, for the past 11 years, students in the Tulane School of Architecture have built a sukkah, an open-air hut-like structure under which Jews celebrate Sukkot, a week-long fall harvest festival.
