Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Urbanism

Sustainable Urbanism Review

Twelve credits to analyze, design, and shape more just and resilient cities.

The Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Urbanism provides graduate students with an interdisciplinary framework for understanding and addressing the social, environmental, and spatial challenges facing contemporary cities.

Through coursework in urban geography, mapping and representation, global urbanism, and engaged urban design, students develop the tools to analyze urban conditions, understand urbanization across different contexts and scales, and propose more equitable and adaptive urban futures.

The certificate is part of Tulane’s Sustainable Urbanism Program, which approaches the city through the lens of territory, bringing together design, urban studies, and planning to address contemporary social, environmental, and spatial challenges within the broader framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

New Orleans as a Laboratory

New Orleans offers an exceptional setting in which to study urbanism: a delta city shaped by water, infrastructure, climate risk, cultural histories, and questions of equity and adaptation. Students have the opportunity to engage these issues in a city where many of the central challenges of contemporary urbanization are visible in everyday life.

  • Analyze urban territories through geography, mapping, and spatial representation.
  • Understand urbanization across different histories, geographies, and scales.
