The School of Architecture currently offers six degree programs:
M.Arch., Professional Degree: 5 Years
NAAB Accredited
This baccalaureate program is structured with required courses and electives to give students thorough professional preparation, opportunities for study in the liberal arts, and advanced study in architecture. Student obtain design education through study of: architectural history and theory, structures, freehand drawing, technological systems, digital media and urban studies. They will be fully immersed in digital design techniques while learning to incorporate knowledge from historic, environmental, social, programmatic and technological studies into the design studio.
M.Arch. I First Professional Degree: 3.5 Years
NAAB Accredited
The Master of Architecture (M.Arch I) is a professional degree program for students who have already received a previous college degree in a non-architecture major. The student’s first experience with design education is the summer program, a twelve-week, fast-paced and rigorous experience inclusive of lecture courses introducing the students to issues in both technology and design, an intensive design studio, and an emphasis on the rich possibilities of the City of New Orleans and the region as a design stimulus.
M.Arch. I, Advanced Standing, First Professional Degree: 2 Years
NAAB Accredited
The professional degree of Master of Architecture with “Advanced Standing” is for students who have already received a previous college degree in a 4-year (pre-professional) architecture major. In most cases, Advanced Standing M.Arch I students enter into Year 2 of the 3.5 year M.Arch I degree program.
M.Arch. II, Graduate Post-Professional Degree: 1 Year
Not Accredited
The M.Arch II degree program offers independent, advanced study in architecture for individuals already holding a 5-year professional architecture degree. The program allows students the opportunity to focus on research and study in a special interest area and to develop an individual study program around their thesis topic. In recent years, many of those enrolled in the program have been international students, adding to the diversity of the student body.
MPS - Masters of Preservation Studies
Not Accredited
The Masters of Preservation Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary opportunity to learn the essentials of preservation practice in one of America’s most historic cities. The MPS program builds upon the design strength of the School of Architecture and the expertise of its faculty and its commitment to the immediate community, the nation, and the Gulf-Caribbean Region. The comprehensive course offerings, combined with a student-designed practicum, insure that those interested in historic preservation receive the education that meets their individual needs and desires. This broad, interdisciplinary approach will prepare graduates to occupy positions of leadership in community preservation and cultural heritage development.
MSRED - Master of Sustainable Real Estate Development
Not accredited by NAAB as a professional degree in architecture. However, this program is fully approved and accredited through the Southern Associations of Colleges and Schools as is Tulane University as a whole.
The one-year program prepares post-baccalaureate students from diverse fields to explore the regenerative development of cities. The program blends educational material in business, architectural design, planning and related fields to empower its graduates to become effective and influential participants and contributors in the fields of real estate, finance, development and design. The program aspires to place 100% of its graduates in real estate development and related firms, and its administrators will work proactively to identify and build opportunities for graduates to work in for-profit and non-profit business settings that produce innovative strategies for sustainable change in communities. The program draws from case study examples across the United States exploring the power of public-private partnerships, innovative financing strategies, and the fundamental teamwork that is necessary for any successful and sustainable real estate development enterprise.
National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)
In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted a 6-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards.
Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degreed programs may consist of a pre-professional undergraduate degree and a professional graduate degree that, when earned sequentially, constitute an accredited professional education. However, the pre-professional degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.
Tulane School of Architecture offers the following NAAB- accredited degree programs:
M.Arch., I First Professional Degree : 111 graduate credits
B.Arch., Professional Degree : 170 undergraduate credits
