Career Explorations in Architecture
Architecture is a discipline and a career that requires professional training. High school students considering career options may have had little opportunity to become acquainted with the unique blend of visual orientation, creative process, academic investigation and professional training that forms an architectural education. Career Explorations in Architecture is designed to offer students a short, intensive introduction to architecture to help them make informed decisions about their direction in post-secondary education and beyond.
Students will spend their three weeks in the School of Architecture exploring the ideas, methods, and issues of architecture. Lectures, field trips, discussions, critiques, and other activities during the four-hour daily class session will be supplemented by regular design exercises to be completed outside class time. Students will sample the intensity as well as the subjects of a collegiate architecture curriculum.
The program is intended for high school students who have completed their sophmore year. Younger students who demonstrate maturity in their attitudes and schoolwork may also apply. High school graduates may apply as well, and presently enrolled Tulane and Newcomb students may take the course for college credit.
At the completion of the course, high school students who pursue a degree at Tulane University will have earned a university elective worth three credit hours. Students who pursue a 5 year Master of Architecture (M. ARCH) or a Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BSA) at Tulane University School of Architecture will have earned an architecture elective worth three credit hours. Credits are non-transferrable.
The program runs from Sunday, June 22 - Friday, July 11. It meets mornings from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the lecture hall, and in the afternoon a studio meets from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Field trips which may require additional time will be scheduled periodically.
