News John Walter Rock, Architect/Professor Emeritus passes away

John Walter Rock, Architect/Professor Emeritus, born June 7, 1923, died on Friday, February 6, 2009, at the age of 85 years. Born and raised In New Orleans, LA, son of Mena Alberts and John Rock of New Orleans, LA. A graduate of Fortier High School, he later enlisted in the 8th Army Air Corps. He was a 1st Lieutenant stationed in England during WWII and served as a Bombardier flying 35 missions over Europe. He was honored with the Air Medal with Oak Leaf clusters. After the war, he attended Tulane University for one year. He transferred to the University of Illinois and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree. Mr. Rock taught for 38 years in the School of Architecture at Tulane University. He also maintained a private practice, known as Rock and Galloway Architects, for almost 50 years with his partner William Galloway. In this capacity, he designed scores of public buildings, churches and private homes. His designs were exhibited nationally and internationally, some of which received Awards for Excellence in Design. Among those were the Performing Arts and Resource Center at Mt. Carmel Academy in New Orleans, LA, Albert Wicker Elementary School in Orleans Parish, and Fort Polk Elementary School in Leesville, LA. One of the churches he designed of which he was especially proud was his own parish church of St. Philip Neri in Metairie, LA.
