News TRUDC to develop design guidelines for city

The Tulane Regional Urban Design Center, directed by Adjunct Associate Professor Grover Mouton, has been contracted to develop and implement a set of design guidelines for the City of Slidell, LA.

Though the guidelines will first focus on an important commercial corridor and the historic Olde Towne district, Mayor Ben Morris and city Planning Director Tim Jackson hope to expand the influence of the program across the entire city by the end of the year.

A new connection between Fremaux Avenue and I-10 represents the last opportunity to create a unique gateway into Slidell, with adjacency to and greater awareness of the historic Olde Towne district. The character of this mixed-use neighborhood should be promoted through guidelines that encourage new economic growth and building while maintaining and improving the quality of life represented by its walk-ability and existing urban and architectural context. Enacting a series of design guidelines, along with a process of design review led by Professor Mouton , will allow new businesses to be created along the roadway with an eye towards quality construction and design.

The TRUDC has a long history of community-outreach, most notably working with the City of Mandeville to create a set of design guidelines that has successfully allowed their city to maintain its historic quality, allow new development in a proper design context, and conduct design review based on these guidelines. The TRUDC will publicly present their current work at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium on January 29th, seeking to engage the community and receive important input that will guide its efforts in the coming weeks and months.
