Kronberg Wall architecture Firm, founded by Eric Kronberg (TSA ’97) recieves Grand Prize for New Urbanism's Annual Charter Awards
Atlanta (May 21, 2015) – Atlanta-based Kronberg Wall Architects earned top honors at the 14th annual Charter Awards hosted by the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) earlier this month in Dallas, Tex. Taking the Grand Prize for the rehabilitation project Iberville Offsites, representatives from Kronberg Wall accepted the award.
Located in New Orleans, the Iberville Offsites project combines historic preservation with green retrofitting through the restoration of 46 historic, vernacular dwellings using environmentally-friendly technology and building practices. The project team benefited from state and federal tax credit programs, including a federal Choice Neighborhoods grant, to make modern, green living accessible to low-income and racially-diverse long-time residents.
“We are completely humbled and honored that our work on Iberville Offsites has been recognized, particularly by an organization like CNU,” said Kronberg Wall principal Eric Kronberg. “Our hope is that this work will inspire other projects in other cities to further the goal of sustainable, pragmatic preservation.”
Iberville Offsites had previously received the National Trust Historic Preservation Secretary’s Award for the renovation of the homes. Innovative construction methods approved by the National Park Services were used in order to create energy efficient structures while preserving historic components of the original houses. Kronberg Wall completed the construction of the 46 affordable homes in 2014.
“Iberville Offsites is representative of so many things that we are trying to do,” said 2015 Charter Awards jury chair and CNU cofounder Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk. “Private initiative and public support are skillfully combined.”
