August Perez III, well known New Orleans architect, dies at 81

August Perez III, a founding member of the Krewe of Bacchus and former Captain of the Krewe of Bacchus, died Friday in his home. He was 81.
Mr. Perez was a graduate of Fortier High School and earned an architecture degree from Tulane University in 1956, where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.
He was an esteemed architect and respected business man serving on board of the Louisiana Association of Architects and the Bank of New Orleans. Changing the New Orleans skyline and beyond, his notable projects include the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, the Denver International Airport, the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Harrah’s Casino, Pontchartrain Civic Center, One Canal Place, Pizza d’Italia, Zephyr Stadium and the Rouse Riverwalk Marketplace.
His business ventures included the Beverly Dinner Theatre, the Mississippi Aerial River Transit, the Sugar House Hotel and August Perez & Associates Inc.
Mr. Perez is one of the founding members of the Krewe of Bacchus, and led as captain from 1982-1989. Through the leadership of Mr. Perez and Pip Brennan the Krewe of Bacchus broke Carnival tradition, staging a Sunday night parade that would be the highlight of the Carnival season. Its floats were bigger and more spectacular that anything seen in Carnival, featuring a celebrity king. The Krewe left a lasting mark on the city of New Orleans. Today, his son, August Perez IV, continues his legacy serving as an administrator for the Krewe.
His favorite pastimes included hunting and fishing, he was a member of the New Orleans Big Game Fishing Club.
Mr. Perez is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Cheryl Littleton Perez, sister, Marcelle Perez Pfister, daughters and sons-in law, David and Jean Loeb, David and Suzanne Schuber, David and Sandra Wellmeyer, David and Julie Barnhill, daughter Corinne Perez, and son and daughter in law August IV and Brenna Perez, twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, August Jr. and Marcelle Perez, sister Maurine Perez Hogan, daughter Lynn Perez.
