Historical Geographies of New Orleans

This course, which will be conducted in both lecture and seminar format, is to introduce students to analyzing places spatially, using New Orleans in the past, present, and future as a case study. Objectives toward this goal include: to learn the basic concepts of historical geography, geographical analysis, and “reading the landscape”; to become familiar with the basic history and geography of New Orleans, in both fact and perception; and to learn how Katrina transformed the city and what future city may emerge.
