Contemporary Issues in Environmental Management
Instructor: D. Etheridge
3 Credits [E]
With the rise in awareness of global scale environmental issues such as global warming and rising sea-level, a huge amount of media attention has been given to changing the way humans use the natural resources of the planet. Green building practice has been at the forefront of this movement and it is difficult today to find a designer who does not include ‘sustainability’ in their goals for a given project. Contemporary Issues in Environmental Management will serve as a basic introduction to core concepts in environmental science and management fields and is intended to support design professionals committed to developing solutions to complex and dynamic environmental issues. After some introduction to such core concepts we spend the majority of the semester looking at a number of case studies/issues in detail and investigate the specific roles the designer can play (from the architectural to the urban/landscape scale) to improve these situations. Students will also be required to document media coverage of environmental crises and success stories from around the world throughout the semester. Each week there will be required reading assigned, and students will be expected to come to class prepared to discuss the material. This course will also involve at least 2 off campus field trips and a number of guest lecturers who are experts in their fields.
